As Clerk of Session, and on behalf of my fellow session members, Larry Sorrells and Rick Laurence, I am reaching out to our members and friends of the church to bring your attention to the financial issues we are currently facing.  The work and ministry of Wintergarden is extraordinary, and I have personally been a witness to the expansion of our outreach in the community through our Food Pantry, Garden of Eatin’, long-term disaster recovery and as a host site for many organizations that promote recovery and healing.  God has certainly been working in and through us!

We have a beautiful campus and buildings that we all share as congregants, volunteers and neighbors.  The expenses associated with maintaining and operating the church property are ongoing, and despite various budget reductions implemented by the session, the budget currently reflects a deficit.   Friends, this is hard, and even harder choices have been made such as having to let go of some of the staff.  Pastor Devon has graciously reduced her time in order to lower her salary and benefits package.  But we all know, Pastor Devon, is not and never has been a part-time pastor.  She has given her whole heart, love and energy to the church and to us. But here is the thing you should know and consider, as blessed as we are to have her as our pastor, it is the members, friends and volunteers that are the church.  It is up to us to put our efforts, our hearts, our energy and our resources to help the church sustain. Without the collective effort, the future of Wintergarden remains uncertain. Our faith teaches us that, even in the most challenging seasons, hope can flourish when we come together in unity and generosity. In this spirit, we earnestly ask each of you to consider how you might contribute—whether through ongoing financial support, volunteering, or simply sharing the mission of our church with others who may be able to help.

Every gift, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. If you are able, we encourage you to increase your regular giving or make a special contribution during this particularly trying time. If you have ideas for fundraising, or know of resources and connections we might pursue, your input is not only welcomed but needed. Together, we can ensure that Wintergarden continues its vital work—feeding the hungry, nurturing spiritual growth, and serving as a beacon of hope and compassion in our community.

With this, we are having a congregational meeting after worship on July 13, 2025. Melana Scruggs, the General Presbyter will be joining us for this gathering.

Let us move forward with trust, courage, and love, knowing that our collective effort can secure a vibrant future for our church and all those it touches. Thank you for your continued faithfulness and support.

On behalf of the Session
Maralee McGowen, Clerk of Session
